“Krokbragd” is a traditional Scandinavian weaving pattern that produces a thick, weft-face woven fabric in a beautiful “crooked path” design.
Traditionally, krokbragd was created using a floor loom, with tie-ups and treadles. However, not everyone has the access, money, or space to own a floor loom. In order to make this beautiful pattern more accessible to more people, I have developed this class to teach students how to weave krokbragd on a small frame loom.
In this one-day, in-person class, we will learn the basics of weaving tapestry in general and krokbragd specifically. Students will choose from a variety of colorful yarn (which is provided) to make gradients, stripes, or block patterns. We will weave one coaster-sized tapestry, with the possibility to start another depending on speed.
Students will each receive their own tapestry loom, shuttle sticks, wooden comb for packing the warp, and tapestry needle—all of which are theirs to keep thanks to a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
Emily Wick is a fiscal year 2025 recipient of a Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
